Challenge: European satellite applications - Forum Virium Helsinki

Pre-commercial public procurement process SPACE4Cities About The SPACE4Cities project is coordinated by Forum Virium Helsinki, the innovation company of the City of Helsinki. The project is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe program through the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA). The Challenge SPACE4Cities aims to use European satellite applications to solve urban challenges and create more sustainable urban environments. The common challenge is to design, develop and pilot replicable solutions utilising European satellite data and space technologies (Copernicus and/or Galileo) for better and more dynamic management of public areas, green spaces, transport infrastructure and city maintenance – and cities’ overall resilience and functionality. The three challenges under this PCP are defined as follows:

• Sustainable Mobility Challenge: to transform urban mobility, while reducing CO₂  emissions, addressing critical issues related to active mobility, public transportation, logistics management, resilience to disruptions, accessible infrastructure and safe and secure drone flights.
• Climate Resilience Challenge: to harness satellite technology to address the dual challenge of climate change mitigation and adaptation in urban environments. The initiative seeks innovative solutions that enhance climate resilience, facilitate greenification, and support the energy transition.
• Urban Planning & Management Challenge: to leverage digital technologies in urban planning and maintenance to improve the precision of urban data collection, enhance the ability to model new urban scenarios, and effectively visualise these models in 3D models.

Challenge: Identification and sorting of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap - Tata Steel

Identification and sorting of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap after magnetic separation   Tata Steel About Tata Steel is an Indian multinational and a global leader in steel production, manufacturing, and industrial solutions, with a focus on sustainability, innovation and advanced recycling processes.   The Challenge The challenge focuses on optimizing the identification, sorting and quality control of scrap materials in the steel recycling process. Its aim is to improve:   

• The efficiency of separating ferrous and non-ferrous scrap materials after magnetic sorting.   
• The automation of sorting processes to reduce dependence on manual labor.  

The goal is to develop an automated solution that effectively identifies and separates ferrous scrap from non-ferrous materials, improving accuracy and ensuring a more streamlined operation.   Reward Successful proposals may receive funding and collaboration opportunities with Tata Steel to implement and scale the proposed solutions.   Timeframe

Challenge: Recycling Technologies for Biodegradable Films - PepsiCo

Seeking Recycling Technologies for Biodegradable Films PepsiCo About PepsiCo is a global food and beverage corporation dedicated to innovation, sustainability and enhancing consumer experiences, with an emphasis on creating advanced solutions that optimize operations, minimize environmental impact and enhance customer engagement. The Challenge The challenge focuses on developing innovative recycling solutions for bio-based and biodegradable packaging, particularly multi-material biopolymer structures. It aims to:

• Enable conversion of bio-based packaging into high value starting materials.
• Address separation challenges in mixed biopolymer materials such as PLA and PHA.
• Develop scalable chemical, enzymatic or mechanical recycling approaches that improve efficiency and material recovery.

The goal is to advance sustainable recycling technologies for compostable packaging, ensuring their viability in a circular economy. Reward Successful proposals may receive funding ranging from $25,000 to $50,000 for the initial proof-of-concept phase, with potential additional funding of up to $100,000 for further development. Selected applicants will have also the opportunity to collaborate with PepsiCo experts. Challenge: Recyclable closure for paper beverage bottles - PepsiCo

Recyclable Closure for Paper Beverage Bottles PepsiCo About PepsiCo is a global food and beverage corporation dedicated to innovation, sustainability and enhancing consumer experiences, with an emphasis on creating advanced solutions that optimize operations, minimize environmental impact and enhance customer engagement. The Challenge The challenge focuses on developing a re-closable fiber-based closure for paper beverage bottles that can be recycled in the paper stream. It aims to improve:

• Durability, by ensuring the closure resists breakdown from liquids and maintains integrity.
• Food safety compliance, meeting FDA and equivalent regulatory standards.
• Recyclability, ensuring no negative impact on the paper recycling process.
• Seal integrity, maintaining dimensional stability across temperature and humidity variations.
• Sensory neutrality, ensuring no impact on the taste or smell of the beverage.

Reward Successful proposals may receive up to $100,000 in funding for proof-of-concept, with potential for further financial support.
