About the Call for Tenders
The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) has officially launched a new call for tenders under the initiative titled "AI for Public Good." Managed by DG CONNECT’s Directorate A – the Artificial Intelligence Office, this tender aims to harness the potential of open-source Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address major societal challenges.
This call is part of the European Commission’s broader strategy to promote trustworthy, human-centric AI. Open to consortia and stakeholders across the EU and associated countries, the tender seeks to catalyze applied research, development, and deployment of AI-powered tools in strategic public sectors.
The Challenges
This Call for Tenders is divided into two targeted lots, each addressing a pressing public sector challenge through innovative AI applications.
-
Lot 1 - AI for Public Good (Health): Innovative AI-powered cancer imaging solutions for breast and prostate diagnosis. Lot 1 focuses on harnessing Artificial Intelligence to improve the diagnosis and treatment of breast and prostate cancer. This lot supports the development of open-source AI solutions trained on EU cancer imaging datasets, with an emphasis on federated learning and other privacy-preserving methods that avoid transferring sensitive health data. The goal is to ensure these tools can be fine-tuned and adapted across diverse clinical settings and populations, including in lower-resourced healthcare systems. The estimated contract value for Lot 1 is EUR 2.4 million.
-
Lot 2 - AI for Public Good (Energy): Innovative AI-powered solutions for electric grid optimization. Lot 2 focuses on deploying AI-powered, open-source tools to support the optimization of Europe’s electric grids, with a particular emphasis on the integration of renewable energy sources (RES). As the EU accelerates its transition toward net-zero emissions, grid flexibility, digitalisation, and intelligent coordination across system levels have become essential. This lot supports the development of AI solutions that can operate across the entire energy system landscape, from long-term planning to real-time operations, and from transmission networks down to local low-voltage and community grids. The estimated contract value for Lot 2 is EUR 3 million.
