EU’s approach to Advanced Artificial Intelligence - Time for a “CERN for AI”?
With the European AI Act in effect since August 2024, the EU has solidified its position as a global leader in AI regulation. However, Europe faces a critical challenge: matching regulatory strength with a thriving AI industry. Limited computational resources and funding have hindered domestic growth, even as advanced AI (AAI) —lawful, ethical, and robust general-purpose models — emerges as a key technology for the future.
To address this, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed a European AI Research Council, modeled on CERN, to unite public and private funding in a shared effort to advance AI development. Such an institute could help Europe compete in the global AI landscape, ensuring innovation aligns with European values.

A dedicated Euractiv Workshop in Brussels on 30 January 2025, from 12.00 PM to 2.00 PM will explore the following aspects:
- What is Advanced AI, and how can the EU ensure it is truly trustworthy?
- How would the European AI Research Council be funded and governed, and how could its exact mission be defined?
- What would be the benefits for the public and private sector? How about the citizens?
This initiative represents a pivotal step toward building a competitive and ethical AI future for Europe.
