Stories: AnotherBrain is building a human-friendly artificial intelligence

AnotherBrain develops AI-enabled chips for autonomous learning, inspired by the way the cerebral cortex in the human brain functions. Recently, the Paris-based start-up has raised 19 million € in the first closing of its Series A financing led by Seb Alliance, Robinson Technologies, Alpha Intelligence Capital, Daphni, Cathay Capital, together with high-profile individual investors from industrial families. This fundraising is among the Top 3 Series A of the past year in France, and the largest one for a company less than three years old.

The company has developed a fundamentally different way of doing Artificial Intelligence, Organic AITM, which is close to how the human brain works, and goes beyond current mainstream AI based on Deep Learning. Instead of considering the human brain at a microscopic/neuron level as in deep learning, AnotherBrain replicates the brain’s behaviour at a more macroscopic scale, where large neuronal populations have a dedicated function like the perception of motion or curvature.

Bio-Inspired

Like a child, the technology extracts the underlying laws and patterns from its environment and is able to use them to perform high-level tasks. Delivered today as a software, the technology will soon be accessible on an AI chip.

“Our ambition is to build a powerful and human-friendly AI, acceptable to companies (certification) and consumers (privacy). The first commercial solutions are currently tested by Fortune 100 companies, with general availability early 2020”, explained Bruno Maisonnier, the founder and CEO of the company.

According to Bruno Maisonnier, AnotherBrain’s technology has the power to make every sensor an intelligent sensor sending back interpretation of signals rather than the flow of raw data. This will allow the generalization of AnotherBrain’s approach, in particular helping cars achieve autonomous driving (Level 5) by the middle of the next decade.

“The technology is genuinely breakthrough and will deliver benefits which traditional AI (Machine Learning) cannot, such as independence from the cloud (making it more private and secure), and reduced energy consumption. First initial customer deployments have demonstrated AnotherBrain’s strong potential in particular in the field of Industry 4.0” commented Francois-Xavier Meyer, Head of blue-chip corporate investor SEB Alliance

The French start-up AnotherBrain is fast becoming a world-class AI leader, with deep European roots, including its respect for privacy and focus on human-friendly explainable AI, with a global ambition.

Last year, the company’s success was featured on Figaro and AnotherBrain's objective is now to accelerate its development and business internationally. The project has received a Phase 2 grant from the EIC programme in 2018. The total Phase 2 grant amount is 2.4M€.
