Challenge: Biomass Programme 2025 by Cork Education and Training Board

School Energy Pathfinder 2025 - WP1 Biomass Programme
Cork Education and Training Board
About
The Cork Education and Training Board has issued a tender as part of the Pathfinder 2025 Programme, a collaborative initiative between the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and the Department of Education and Youth (DEY) aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions and improving energy efficiency in the public sector. The tender is being conducted as an open procedure and has an estimated value of €363,492.00. The project also serves as a high-visibility demonstrator within local communities, supporting national climate action goals for the education sector.
The Challenge
The challenge addressed by the Cork Biomass Project focuses on three interconnected objectives: decarbonising the heating systems of existing school infrastructure, integrating modular and prefabricated biomass energy systems with minimal disruption, and exploring innovative service delivery models to reduce the financial and operational burden on public institutions.
The primary goal of the project is to test and validate scalable, low-carbon heating solutions for Ireland’s school network that can directly inform the design and implementation of a future national biomass programme. It aims to support the Department of Education and Youth in its commitment to reducing carbon emissions in line with national climate targets, while ensuring that heating systems in schools remain efficient, safe, and cost-effective.
