As an EIC-funded SME, you probably already had the chance to pitch your solution in multiple matchmaking initiatives to attract the attention of investors or potential customers. But did you ever try to build win-win synergies and co-create solutions with Business Partners? The EIC Greenhouse Gas Programme aims to leverage unique collaborative experiences between EIC companies and large European organisations and offer EIC companies the chance to co-create products and services. In this light, the European Innovation Council and Bondalti invite you to apply to our joint EIC GHG Co-creation initiative.

 

The manifesto for environmental stewardship and action has shown how dependant we are on each other to achieve sustainable development and collective wellbeing. With this in mind, multiple European corporates, regions and industrial organizations are taking action to reduce their climate impacts while building innovative collaborations to drive common progress and achieve mutual goals. But to do so, they need you.

 

With a mission to put chemistry to good use, Bondalti wishes to create innovative and sustainable ways of helping the planet and its communities. Having built itself up to become the biggest private Portuguese producer in the chemical sector, Bondalti has vast experience in this market dating back to 1898. They own two industrial facilities in Estarreja (Portugal) and Torrelavega (Spain) and have become the top producer of industrial chemicals of excellence – making their name nationally and also in the international market. Bondalti believes in continuous improvement, seeking disruptive approaches to the sectors where it operates to ensure high-quality innovative solutions, superior safety, and top environmental standards. Your co-creation journey

The EIC GHG Co-creation with Bondalti will be an entirely virtual service for six months, following the co-creation journey below. 

 

Step 1: Applications and Info webinar 

To apply to the EIC GHG Co-creation with Bondalti, you will have to fill the application form available here by the 15th of October 2021. 
During the application process, an info webinar (6th October 2021, 11:00 CET) will be organised to provide more information about the co-creation initiative, the application requirements, and challenges. If you would like to attend this info-webinar, register here

Step 2: Selection process 

As soon as we close the submission process, your application will be shared with Bondalti. Then, they'll proceed with the evaluation and selection of the final list of participants. You'll be contacted once the selection process is finalised. Also, please note that any feedback or recommendation to the companies that were not selected won't be foreseen.

 

Step 3: Co-creation kick-off event – 29th & 30th of November | Save the date! 

After the selection process, a two-day ideation event with Bondalti will take place on the 29th and 30th of November 2021. It will help you better understand the challenges and start co-developing your solutions with the business partners. During this meeting, you'll also have the chance to define a clear roadmap with your next steps.

 

Step 4: Iteration & Development 

You'll have a month to implement the roadmap that you'll define with Bondalti. Not to mention, have the opportunity to validate it regularly to ensure you are steering in the right direction.

 

Demo Day 

The Demo Day will showcase the final solutions and promote them to a bigger audience. Date TBD.

 

Challenges

Bondalti challenges are focused on the thematics of Preventing industrial emissions, Eco-friendly chemicals, Carbon foot-print assessment, Energy management, Waste, and Supply chain improvement.

 

Preventing industrial emissions

  • Challenge 1 – Zero-emission Industrial Steam Generation

Specific challenge: System capable of generating up to 1000 kg/h of steam (24 bar) with no GHG emissions (e.g., either using hydrogen or electricity)

•    Challenge 2 - Diffuse emissions reduction program

Specific challenge: Assessment of non-fugitive diffuse emissions of VOCs, either from new calculation algorithms or through direct measurements. 

 

Eco-friendly chemicals

  • Challenge 3 - Eco-friendly refrigerants for Chlorine Liquefaction

Specific challenge: To have alternatives to freon as refrigerants for the chlorine liquefaction process; to find a new refrigeration technology with lower environmental impact, safer and cost-competitive.

  • Challenge 4 – Bio-based aromatics (Bio Benzene or bio-aniline)

Specific challenge: The challenge is to develop a viable process to produce benzene or aniline from biomass, therefore reducing the usage of petroleum-based raw materials in the Aniline production.

 

Carbon footprint assessment

  • Challenge 5 - Product carbon footprint assessment

Specific challenge: The challenge is to determine product carbon footprint, with a focus on GHG emissions of scope 3 that can include goods and services, transport actives, production, and end-use.

 

Energy management

  • Challenge 6 - Electrical energy Storage

Specific challenge: The challenge is to find storage solutions for electricity produced by renewable sources, at Bondalti's consumption scale (50-100 MW scale).

  • Challenge 7 – Zero-emission back up electricity

Specific challenge: Fuel switching for electricity backup generations (currently diesel consumption), taking into consideration the safety specificities of the industry.

  • Challenge 8 - Renewable energy sourcing portfolio management system

Specific challenge: To develop and deploy an energy sourcing portfolio management system that will manage the electrolysis operation electricity needs (chorine plant, hydrogen plant, etc...) by integrating the production, supply, storage of renewable electricity with the electricity market, according to the needs and the downstream industrial requirements (e.g., compression and storage requirements).

  • Challenge 9 - Energy Recovery from steam networks

Specific challenge: The challenge is to propose a system, with high efficiency and turndown, to recover energy from a variable and discontinuous excess low-pressure steam source. E.g., Conversion to electrical energy, storage and/or higher usable thermal level (medium pressure steam).

 

Waste

  • Challenge 10 - Waste reduction and valorisation

Specific challenge: It is necessary to evaluate other possibilities to reduce, treat and recover wastes at the chemical plant, such as:

  • the sludges resulting from salt primary treatment, in which the high chloride content does not allow the sludge to be composted and determines that the waste is considered dangerous.
  • non-recovered sulfanilic acid – reduction is the main target; however, it is also necessary to identify if the residue can be recovered and used for other purposes.
  • find alternative uses for an effluent that is incinerated, reducing the need to use this facility and the natural gas consumption/CO2 emissions. The effluent stream is an isomer mixture of mononitrophenol, dinitrophenols and trinitrophenol ammonium salts, with a water content of about 90%.

 

Supply chain improvement

  • Challenge 11 - Supply chain: the best route

Specific challenge: Work together with the transportation suppliers in reduction emissions:

  1. definition of the most effective routes from an environmental point of view.
  2. driver training in eco-driving.
