Backed by the European Innovation Council (EIC), Scantrust developed a new software solution called Scantrust e-Label to provide wine businesses all over the world with a simple-to-use and reliable software system for the preparation and provision of mandatory wine-related product information. Founded by Nathan J. Anderson, Co-founder & CEO, and Justin Picard, Co-founder & CTO, Scantrust e-Label addresses regulations that reflect official requirements starting December 8, 2023, while addressing one of the European Commission’s key priorities for digitalisation.

Scantrust has been developing and improving expertise on packaging enhanced with QR codes since 2014. Commercialising the process for creating the world’s first secure QR code for anti-counterfeiting, an innovation developed by Scantrust co-founder Justin Picard, proved to be the first step for one of the most innovative technology companies in the world.

The latest EU wine labelling requirements, the Regulation (EU) 2021/2117, includes several revisions and amendments of previously ratified regulations released over the last two decades and related to Common Agricultural Policy. In it, restrictions and the required format in which the information can be displayed alongside the relevant wine products are included. In addition, the exact terminology that can be used to describe wine products as well as the delivery method for information e.g., directly on the product, with attached labels, or by electronic methods such as QR codes have all been clarified in the latest regulations.

One of the European Commission’s main goals is to improve the delivery of information to consumers in the EU. Hence, the new regulation requires the provision of nutrition, ingredient, allergen, and energy information along with the sale of any alcoholic wine produced in the EU. That also means providing information in all the official EU languages.

Wine businesses that have chosen to use Scantrust e-Label are discovering that managing the task of following the new EU wine labelling has been simplified significantly. E-Label users can enter the required information in the online e-Label editor, generate a corresponding label QR code, and then include the code designs on their wine labels for fast and reliable compliance. Also, the e-Label software system includes automatic language detection to display a wine product scanner's relevant EU language automatically. Moreover, the content and mandatory product information updates are instantaneous, therefore, there is no need to reprint and re-label products in the market.

Scantrust received an Accelerator grant from the European Innovation Council (EIC) to further develop their technology that seamlessly integrates with standard, widely used systems and devices employed by: businesses in production and distribution (QR codes, internal software systems); the packaging industry (standard digital printers); and consumers (smartphones) in order to empower each user at any stage of a supply chain to instantaneously verify a product.
