What is the pitching challenge?
Maritime Climate Action: Market Technologies to support implementation of EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) & FuelEU Regulations
In an era marked by unprecedented disruptions, the shipping industry finds itself at a crossroads. The global drive towards sustainable maritime practices has resulted in discussions surrounding sustainability and energy efficiency taking centre stage in the industry.
The European Union (EU) has been playing a significant role in climate diplomacy, particularly in the shipping sector where the EU exports its position at the international level towards the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). This European leadership is strengthened by the implementation of EU ETS and FuelEU regulations.
The enactment of EU ETS and FuelEU pushes maritime and shipping companies to reduce carbon intensity from the power produced on board and to monitor the total amount of greenhouse gases that they are allowed to emit, while foreseeing penalties imposed in cases of non-compliance. This significantly changed the regulatory environment in which the maritime industry evolves and at the same time created an unprecedented opportunity in maritime tech. From modernising vessel propulsion systems and hull cleaning to embracing traditional methods of sail-assisted propulsion, shipowners explore a plethora of technological advancements to enhance their fleet’s compliance with EU ETS and FuelEU regulations.
However, the implementation of new technologies in the maritime industry can face several challenges, including cost constraints, compatibility with existing systems, data security, and employee upskilling.
To link the demand and supply sides of this complex puzzle, this challenge seeks to showcase innovative tech suppliers and match them with shipping companies interested in buying or investing in their innovations.
This matchmaking opportunity provides a platform for industry stakeholders to discover innovations, discuss emerging trends and chart the course for the future of shipping.
