The European Commission is looking for experts to review applications for the EIC Horizon Prize for Affordable High-Tech for Humanitarian Aid. The challenge of this Prize is to develop innovative solutions for the delivery of humanitarian aid based on frugal application of advanced technologies. The Prize, with a total value of €5 million, will be allocated in five awards of €1 million each for the best, proven, cost-effective tech-based solution for humanitarian aid in five distinct thematic areas: shelter and related assistance; water, sanitation and hygiene; energy; health and medical care; other forms of humanitarian aid ("open category").
The prize was launched on 30 November 2017 during the ECHO Partners Conference in Brussels. Applications will be accepted until 15 January 2020 and the Prize will be awarded in the third quarter of 2020.
After the application deadline, a pre-selection panel of independent evaluators will assess the applications remotely and will meet in Brussels for the consensus meeting. Each panel will identify up to five finalists in each category, whose marks reach at least the threshold mentioned in the rules of contest. After the remote evaluations, the five finalists in each category will be invited for a hearing by a jury to determine the five winners (one in each category). The pre-selection panel and the jury may have a different composition.

We are looking for the following expertise:
- Humanitarian innovation, in particular in the five areas of the Prize;
- Ethics in humanitarian aid, including humanitarian principles;
- Advanced technologies applied in products/services, including in humanitarian (or related) settings;
- Delivery of humanitarian aid on the ground;
- Frugal innovation applied to technologies.
In addition, for the hearings, we are also looking for people who have been directly affected by nature-made and man-made disasters and benefited from humanitarian aid.

- First, register as an expert on the Funding & Tenders Portal. Fill in your data and when prompted, select keywords that match your expertise. If you are already registered, edit your profile in My Expert Area, and indicate that you want to serve as expert for the EIC Horizon Prize for Affordable High-Tech Humanitarian Aid (to include as keyword in the free text section).
- Second, send an e-mail to EC-TECH4AID-EIC-PRIZE@ec.europa.eu including your name, surname, your expert number from the Funding and Tender Portal (example: EX2017A123456), your CV and a short paragraph explaining why your profile is relevant for this call and including the category(ies) of the Prize you are suitable to be an expert.
