Join us in celebrating the International Day of Clean Energy on 26 January with EIC Accelerator beneficiary Kvasir Technologies! In a world grappling with climate change, and where the maritime sector is among the largest polluters, the Danish clean-tech company offers a game-changing solution with the potential to substitute fossil marine fuels in the short term, ultimately replacing all fossil-derived high-value fuels and chemicals.

Through the EIC-backed SEAFARER project and a recent partnership to establish their first-of-a-kind biofuel production facility, Kvasir Technologies is successfully demonstrating that cutting carbon emissions in heavy transportation is possible by harnessing natural and abundant sources of biomass.

Bringing the next-generation biofuel to the market

Kvasir Technologies’ groundbreaking patented technology can convert any type of lignocellulosic material into a carbon-neutral bio-crude/bio-oil resembling the values and specifications of conventional fossil oil, building on the team’s decades of industrial experience and 10 years of intensive research.

This is the core of our organisational setup, with strong capabilities in R&D. In addition, we are expanding our capabilities in engineering and project development to move further into the value chain in order to build, own and operate (BOO model) our coming plants to produce our bio-oil.

Ulrik Falkenberg Lending, chief commercial officer (CCO) at Kvasir Technologies

With agricultural and forestry waste products – known as lignocellulose – abundantly available, the Danish company’s technology is highly scalable. It was precisely at the stage of the scaling and technical proof of the technology – needing to reach a large volume state before commercialisation – that the EIC-backed SEAFARER project came into the picture.

The commercial use of Kvasir Technologies’ innovation and the bio-oil it produces require large-scale action from day one. This requires substantial funding, and the EIC-backed SEAFARER project is a big part of this journey. The funding from the EIC has triggered private equity investors to invest considerable funds to support the development towards commercialisation.

The memorandum of understanding with Alfa Laval: cooperating on developing new solutions for biofuel plants

Among Kvasir Technologies’ recent milestones, its signing on 11 November of a memorandum of understanding with Alfa Laval to cooperate on developing solutions for biofuel plants particularly stands out.

Indeed, Alfa Laval’s know-how and product offering in separation and heat transfer equipment will enable Kvasir biofuel plants to increase product quality and enhance plant performance.

Regarding the collaboration, Ulrik Falkenberg Lending adds:

We see several areas of potential synergies between Alfa Laval and ourselves. Alfa Laval is uniquely positioned with their capabilities and various kinds of equipment on separation and filtration, and we will use this know-how to upgrade our bio-oil.

Future prospects: Kvasir Technologies’ journey to become a ‘Green Oil Major’

The Danish company’s mission to become a leader in green energy has been further supported by the recent partnership with Aabenraa Havn (port of Aabenraa), which aimed at securing the site for its first-of-a-kind commercial biofuel production facility.

The demonstration plant, under construction in Fredericia, is set to be finalised later this year.

Additional information

The SEAFARER project is a beneficiary of the EIC Accelerator scheme, which helps companies scale up high-impact innovations with the potential to create new markets or disrupt existing ones in identified areas of strategic relevance. Kvasir Technologies coordinates the project, which benefits from the company’s decade-long relevant industrial experience and intensive research aimed at accelerating the shift to a climate-neutral future.
