Challenge: Development of a rapid point-of-care antimicrobial susceptibility testing diagnostic medical device by HaDEA

Hadea challenge

Development of a rapid point-of-care antimicrobial susceptibility testing diagnostic medical device

Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA)

About

The Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) has issued a tender within the context of the EU4Health Annual Work Programme 2024.  EU4Health is the fourth and largest of the EU health programmes, providing funding to national authorities, health organisations and other bodies through grants and public procurement, contributing to a healthier Europe HaDEA manages the vast majority of the total EU4Health budget and implements the programme by managing calls for proposals and tenders from 2021 to 2027.

The Challenge

This challenge aims to accelerate the development of innovative point-of-care diagnostic devices capable of delivering antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) results within one hour or less from sample collection. The envisioned solutions should also ideally enable simultaneous pathogen identification, with a focus on at least one of the bacteria included in the 2024 WHO bacterial pathogen priority list and/or the fungi Candida spp. and Aspergillus fumigatus. This call also supports the advancement of promising rapid AST technologies currently under development, with the overarching goal of enhancing timely clinical decision-making and addressing the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.

Timeframe

Deadline to apply for Step 1 of the procedure: 12 May 2025, 16:00 CEST. Invitations to submit an offer for Step 2 will be indicatively sent out at the beginning of June, with a deadline for step 2 indicatively in early September.

Who can apply

  • Applicants with solutions of TRL 3-8, with a clear pathway for CE marking in the EU19. By the end of the contract, the product developed should aim at reaching system complete and qualified (TRL 8).
