Challenge: Biodegradable spray coatings for fiber-based packaging

Biodegradable spray coatings for fiber-based packaging
About
PepsiCo is a global food and beverage corporation dedicated to innovation, sustainability and enhancing consumer experiences, with an emphasis on creating advanced solutions that optimize operations, minimize environmental impact and enhance customer engagement.
The Challenge
The challenge focuses on developing biodegradable spray-applied coatings for fiber-based beverage packaging that meet performance and recyclability targets. It aims to explore:
- PHA-based sprayable barrier coatings and biodegradable resin systems
- Biodegradable nanocomposite coatings and biopolymer crosslinked networks
- Sprayable aliphatic polyester coatings such as PBS and PBAT blends
- Coating solutions that achieve high fiber recovery rates (>85%) to support repulpability and recycling
The ultimate goal is to enable fully recyclable, fiber-based beverage packaging (350 mL to 1 L) using biodegradable materials with strong barrier performance, in line with PepsiCo’s circular packaging goals.
Reward
Successful applicants may receive funding ranging from $25,000 to $100,000, depending on the proposal. Additional benefits may include access to PepsiCo’s tools and technologies for spray coating and barrier testing, as well as the opportunity to work directly with PepsiCo scientists and engineers experienced in material science, packaging, and large-scale commercialization.
