The EIC funded company Das-Nano developed the first system in the market designed for full-area characterization of graphene, thin-films, and other 2D materials. The company based in Spain has been granted a new patent this year for its innovative Terahertz technology in the US.

Given the enormous potential and investment activity, one  thing  is obvious:  patents  in breakthrough technology are vitally important to realize its true potential and move beyond the hype. For a start-up, patents are a means of validating the company’s foundational innovation and gain credibility. Although several SMEs apply for a patent, very few are able to get it.

This new patent demonstrates Das-Nano’s know-how and its mastery of terahertz technology, which has been a breakthrough in material analysis systems. The company has developed the Onyx Spectrometer and is continuously improving its features.

Onyx is the first system in the market designed to provide a full-area non-destructive characterization of Graphene, thin-films, and other 2D materials. This technology covers the gap between the macro and the nano scale tools characterizing from 0,5 mm2 to large areas (m2), enhancing the industrialization of the research materials.

Betting on young and local talent

This fast and high-resolution measurements provided by Onyx make it a suitable device both for use in the laboratory and in industry, where large areas of material must be examined. Multiple applications have been lately proposed for automotive, wind power and materials research based on terahertz waves and, although Onyx was originally developed for graphene, it has been successfully tested on other samples such as epitaxial SiC, PEDOT, ALD, spin-coated photo-resins, ITO, NbC, and GaN.

“Our professional experience has shown us that our technological developments are on par with the best in the world”, said Eduardo Azanza, CEO and Co-founder of Das-Nano, during an interview to BBVA

In addition to software and analytics experts, the company employs engineers and PhDs who have studied telecommunications, information technology, as well as physics and chemistry. Das-Nano works closely with universities to promote the recruitment and retained talent. The CEO believes that Spain is “an ideal place to create high tech companies” because it has top-level educational institutions and an exemplary base of businesses.

“Currently countries like the United States are setting the standard in the field, but Spain is breaking into the sector with truly innovative projects”, the Das-Nano executive added.

This project has received a Phase 1 and Phase 2 grant from the EIC SME Instrument program. The total Phase 2 grant amount is 1.3M€.
