The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has launched a call to identify small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) working in the area of novel foods that are interested in receiving EFSA’s advice on the requirements for an application to obtain authorisation to market their novel food in the European Union. This initiative aims to support SMEs by providing general pre-submission advice (GPSA) at critical stages of their novel food development and application process.

Apply now

The call will remain open until 31 October 2024.

This call aims to raise awareness and facilitate access for SMEs to the general pre-submission advice (GPSA) service. This service can be requested at any time before the submission of an application; however, this call focuses on two specific stages that may be of special interest for SMEs with limited or no experience in submitting a novel food application, including those:

  • at the very early stage of the development of the novel food, even before starting the studies that will be included in the application;

  • at the latest stages of application preparation, when most of the information that will be included in the application is already available to the SME.

SMEs can submit their expressions of interest via a dedicated form

More details are available in this infopager.

What’s in it for you?

If selected, SMEs will receive valuable advice from EFSA on the requirements for their novel food application. This can help streamline the application process and improve the chances of obtaining authorisation to market their novel food in the EU.

Don’t miss your chance to:

  • receive tailored advice on novel food application requirements;

  • clarify specific regulatory requirements and expectations;

  • improve the quality of your application.

How can you be selected?

To qualify for selection, you must complete the expression of interest form.  Please ensure the information provided is accurate and comprehensive to facilitate EFSA’s review process.

Please note that the information submitted to answer the call, or request advice, as well as that which is submitted in the meetings will be treated as confidential. The only information that EFSA will make publicly available is a summary of the advice and only if and when the application for the authorisation to put the novel food on the EU market that is the subject of the advice is accepted. A non-confidential version of the application dossier will also be made available.
