Who can apply?
RUAG AG is searching for alternative and/or new promising technologies and solutions for the brass passivation process.
They call for applications in the following topic of interest:
- Substitution of chromium VI in the brass passivation process
Context:
Metal forming (mainly brass) is a core competence of our manufacturing site. To meet our quality standards, our products are required to pass an environmental test procedure. This way RUAG Ammotec ensures long-term stability and impeccable operation of its products, even if they are exposed to sea air or brought in contact with saltwater.
Challenge:
- To pass the resistance test, our components must remain unaltered after 48h of exposure to salt mist. This is currently achieved by passivation of the brass material via galvanization with chromium. ECHA (European Chemistry Agency) however recently banned the use of CrVI.
- In some cases, nickel coating is a good substitute. Yet, it is only appropriate for products with larger surface areas because even a very thin coating still alters the dimensions of the final material.
- For our mass-produced goods with smaller surface areas, a low-cost procedure able to make brass components resistant to the marine environment would be preferred. The suitability of the PVD coating technique is limited by the high amount of goods to be treated.
