The European Patent Office (EPO) has just announced the finalists of the European Inventor Award 2023, and 3 EIC-funded organisations made it to this shortlist. The awards ceremony, happening in Valencia, Spain, will be livestreamed on 4 July 2023 and registrations to watch it online are open. Continue reading to know more about the EIC-backed finalists and how you can attend the ceremony.

The objective of the European Inventor Award is to not only recognise technological breakthroughs, but also to cast a spotlight on the individuals who are driving us towards a brighter future. With this initiative, EPO intends to showcase inspiring ideas and underline the role that inventors play in building a smarter, more sustainable world.

The Award is divided in 5 categories: Industry; Research; Non-EPO countries; SMEs; Lifetime achievement; and Young Inventors prize. Within these categories, 3 organisations that have been supported by the European Innovation Council (EIC) made it to the finalists:

- Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) – more details on their nomination

CNRS is a partner and coordinator in several EIC Pathfinder projects. More recently, the centre is coordinating project k-NET, with the goal of developing new architecture, that can emulate the brain’s neural networks, based on the idea that dynamical hyperconnectivity can be implemented not in real space but in reciprocal or k-space.

- D-orbit – more details on their nomination

D-orbit has received funding for their D-3 project which aimed at developing their smart propulsive device for controlled satellite decommissioning and re-entry, giving a response to the increasing need to guarantee a safe and clean access to space for both satellite operators and manufacturers.

- Lios – more details on their nomination

Lios, which is striving to eradicate noise pollution and avoidable hearing damage, was funded by the EIC to implement TANDEM project. Their objective was to improve the development of an acoustic insulation metamaterial to effectively reduce noise pollution, allowing the construction of smaller and lighter products for use in the construction, aerospace, energy, and vehicle sectors.

During the ceremony, the European Inventor Award’s organisation will recognise the achievements of sixteen finalists in the five above mentioned categories, and the Young Inventors Prize. There will also be time to award the Popular Prize to the inventor or team which receives more online votes. If you would like to cast a vote for your favourite inventor, you can visit the Popular Prize website.

The awards ceremony will happen on 4 July 2023 at 12.00 hrs (CEST) in Valencia, Spain, and will be livestreamed, so a broader audience can follow it. If you’d like to watch it, you can register now via this link.
