The EIC created a new Story 8 July 2020
On 29 and 30 June 33 EIC-beneficiaries went on a digital tour of the Netherlands during the EIC Corporate Day with Dutch giants. During the event, the SMEs matched up and explored business opportunities and collaborations with four of the Netherlands’ largest corporates: Eneco, KPN, Rabobank and Unilever.
LUMICKS, an EIC-funded company from the Netherlands, has completed a round of investment led by Farallon Capital Management and Lauxera Capital Partners, including other high-level investors.

The European Innovation Council pilot's funded company InnovaFeed, specialized in the production of insect proteins, announced to have completed a round of 40 million euros, the majority in the form of capital, led by a group of investors by Creadev, the Mulliez family's fund, and Temasek, the Singaporean investment giant. On 14 September 2020 a dozen EIC-backed innovators were invited to an ‘EIC ePitching to Procurers’-session, together with bpost, Belgium’s national postal provider. The SMEs had the opportunity to pitch their innovative solutions on eMobility and charging infrastructure to bpost’s procurement division and engage in pre-arranged business meetings in the hopes of fostering new connections and partnerships.
In 2018, thanks to EnduroSat, the Bulgarian Space Industry celebrated a historical moment: the first country’s CubeSat was activated in space and connected to two ground stations. This was the first space mission for EnduroSat, involving schools and universities to ensure a long-lasting educational outreach program in addition to the technical verification of all the components. This year, a new satellite from EnduroSat will lift off, and the Bulgarian startup will make history again.

The EIC-funded company BotsAndUs announced a partnership with British Airways to provide a solution that will reduce travel stress by assisting all passengers with relevant information to their journey and airport stay. The robot Bill will interact with customers in multiple languages and escort them to locations such as cafes, toilets, meeting rooms and family check-in zones.

In 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic, organisations shifted to remote working arrangements that have made cybersecurity risks a bigger threat. Many start-ups are facing new challenges to ensure social distancing directives while continuing to serve their customers. EIC-beneficiaries are invited to applied to apply to the International Space Pitch Day, organised and financed by the US Department of Defence and the UK Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO. On 17 November, selected start-up tech companies and inventors will get the chance to pitch directly to UK and US military leaders for a $1-million investment to fast-track their ideas for cutting-edge Space innovations.
After receiving the EIC Accelerator grant last year, Positrigo announced that the European Innovation Council Fund (EIC Fund) awarded the company with €1.5 million to top up the second tranche of Positrigo’s series A.
High potential abounds in the green space. The second e-pitching session of the year was focused on renewable energy and allowed six SME’s to virtually pitch their business ideas to key green energy investors.
The past five years were the five hottest years since record-keeping began in 1880. It has become clear that the current Global Warming is caused by greenhouse gases emissions like carbon dioxide and methane. And the burning of fossil fuels by industries is the main contributor to this. But Carbon Clean Solutions Ltd. is reducing industrial CO2 emissions with an innovative technology. The company is of one of the few startups in the world specialised in carbon capture.
From longer droughts to increased flooding and more robust crop diseases, climate change is creating new challenges for the European agriculture sector. With more accurate and reliable water data, crop yields on agricultural land can be improved and this information can help to fight the global food and water crisis. Through the support of the EIC-funded WATER4AGRI project, the Dutch company VanderSat developed a technology that can accurately measure the location and amount of water in the soil, anywhere in the world.
To help industries clean up their workplaces, the tech company Is CLEAN AIR Italia took their water-based air-purifying IoT system to new markets, and the innovation is now reducing air contaminants by more than 90% in multiple environments. Discover their Green Innovation in the EIC Community.

The European Innovation Council pilot Business Acceleration Services and Bpifrance – EuroQuity organised the first EIC Investor Day of 2020. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak the physical event was rendered into an all-digital event with separate ePitching-sessions.
Every year millions of tons of plastic waste end up on our streets, in our rivers and covering our forests. A large part of this waste comes from packaging. The plastic bags we use, for only a few minutes, can last as long as 15 to 1,000 years in the environment and, according to a recent study, people could be ingesting or inhaling approximately 5 grams of plastic every week. The Finnish start-up Paptic Ltd, founded in 2015, addresses this environmental challenge with a sustainable alternative to plastic films. Paptic material has all the advantages of plastic - it's versatile, reusable, light-weight, soft, but it's made of renewable raw materials and it’s recyclable.
On 24 September 2020 six EIC-backed innovators had the chance to show their COVID-19 solutions during a dedicated EIC ePitching session with Investors, taking place during the R&I Days 2020. The session was a follow-up of the first EIC ePitching with Investors on COVID-19, which took place in April this year.

22 April 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the annual celebration of the environmental movement. According to the official Earth Day site, the theme for this year's Earth Day is climate action. The mission is to encourage individuals and organisations around the world to continue moving towards innovation to face the climate crisis and seize the enormous opportunities of a zero-carbon future. But while this day is a 24-h celebration, many start-ups spend the entire year going green, with innovating projects to accomplish this goal. A total of 117 innovative solutions to tackle the coronavirus have been selected as winners of the European Innovation Council-led #EUvsVirus Hackathon. The event, which involved over 380 volunteers, 2,400 mentors and over 800 partners, brought together over 20,900 participants from 141 different nationalities, as well as different areas of expertise and backgrounds.
The 1st Community Workshop organised by LEADERSHISP4SMEs is taking place on the afternoon of 24 March 2021. The event will cover IPR-driven growth topics for innovative start-ups and SMEs.
On the 2021 World Autism Awareness Day, the EIC Community gathered 4 EIC-funded companies changing and improving autistic people's lives.

On 19-20 February 2020, companies supported under the European Innovation Council (EIC)  had the opportunity to accelerate their business collaborating with AB InBev, the world’s leading brewer and one of Europe’s biggest food and drinks companies. AB InBev opened its doors to 32 SMEs to pitch and present their business cases at the group’s Global Innovation and Technology Center (GITEC) in its home city of Leuven, Belgium.
The European Innovation Council (EIC), in collaboration with BBVA and Ferrovial, organised an online Corporate Day on 26 and 27 May 2020, bringing together 19 EIC-backed SMEs with over 50 corporates representatives. The online Corporate Day was the second event of its kind to be organised this month and gave SMEs and corporate representatives the opportunity to find synergies and explore business opportunities and further collaborations.
Small and medium-sized enterprises take centre stage at World IP Day 2021. This year's celebration highlights the importance of startups for growth in a post-pandemic world with the theme "IP and SMEs: Taking your ideas to market."

On 3 and 4 June 2020 the European Innovation Council celebrated the launched of a brand-new initiative specifically focused on the EU Green Deal. The EIC Planet.tech brings together EIC-backed start-ups/scale-ups with four large corporates, namely AB inBev, DEME, Nestle and P&G, with the objective to develop a number of impactful Proof of Concepts (PoC). Nicolas Verschelden, Head of Digital Innovation ABI Europe and Managing Partner Dream Tech alliance, a joint consortium of different tech-partners that co-innovate and co-invest together, goes deeper into AB InBev’s motivations for joining Planet.tech and what they are hoping to get out of it.
The “Research Meets Industry” event, organised by FET BRIEFING, is back with a new session on April 21st, 2021, this time focusing on innovative projects that are developing material and technologies for the Energy and Environment areas.

These data centres and cloud providers consume 6% of the global electricity and generate 4% of the global CO2 emissions, posing a serious threat to the environment. The digital industry is trying to minimise its impact on the environment with different attempts, and the Spanish startup Submer is doing its part. The EIC-funded project is changing data centres to make them as sustainable as possible.
