Two SME Instrument-funded companies make it to the list of 50 hottest fintech companies in Europe. Both companies use blockchain technology to fight financial exclusion.
A total of 65 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) form 16 countries have been selected for funding under the latest round of the SME Instrument. The companies will receive a total amount of €113 million to share between their projects to get their innovations faster on the market.

Medical technology company EBAMed announced the successful completion of a CHF 1.2 million seed financing round. EBAMed develops medical devices to enhance protontherapy, a precise non-invasive treatment option for heart arrhythmia patients. The seed financing will be used to test EBAMed‘s first integrated ultrasound-based device to monitor heart motion and command the therapy machine. These pre-clinical tests are planned for 2020 in at least one protontherapy center in Europe or the United States.

European Innovation Council pilot's funded company Signinum Inovação, through XpectralTEK, has developed a multispectral imaging technology that allows to control pests and anticipate diseases in the vineyards. The technology is now being tested with Vinho Verde producers from the Minho region of Portugal.
The Future and Emerging Technologies programme (FET) allows also young researchers and ambitious students to contribute to some of the most exciting research adventures. In a win-win situation, the fresh knowledge of junior researchers can become an asset for the progress of complex scientific challenges, while the students can experience a multidisciplinary approach to research.
Dr. Regina Luttge is an expert in medical and biological microsystems having bio-inspired functionalities. She coordinates CONNECT, a Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) project, which aims at providing better treatment for neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
The Irish company, developing cutting-edge technology to help cure cancers, has secured a significant new Series C round of approximately €18 million, bringing the total equity funding to around €37 million. The capital was led by existing shareholders, including Seamus Mulligan, an experienced biopharmaceutical executive.

Irish technology company SoapBox Labs has teamed up with Microsoft to bring its child focused speech recognition software to the tech giant’s Azure platform. The company will see its tech deployed in a school pilot programme to prove it has a global, scalable product.
Since 4 June 2020, the Swedish biotech company Idogen AB is traded on Nasdaq First North Growth Market. The traditional bell ringing was skipped due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the event was featured on the Nasdaq trading floor at Times Square in New York. Idogen AB develops tolerogenic cell therapies to prevent the patient’s immune system from attacking biological agents, transplanted organs or the body’s own cells or tissues.

They provides a phase shift to the signal by adding propagation delay and are the main building blocks of any beam steering capable system. Phase shifters are used e.g. in satellite communications, beamforming modules, phase cancellation, or communications antennas. SMARTWAVE project wants to take advantage of the re-configurability potential of high-frequency phase shifters and innovate them by proposing new technological approach, which meets the requirements of frequency scalability, increased power efficiency, reduced size and re-configurability.
