Imagine bringing together several European business partners, each with their own green challenges, involving many participants to solve them. This will be the EIC Greenathon, the first online hackathon focused on the European Green Deal. The Danish multinational Danfoss joined the initiative and will literally level up the energy of this competition. The event featured three panels exploring the sustainable/impact investments landscape, private investments needed in order to reach the ambitious targets of the Green Deal and, last but not least, showcasing some of the EIC green tech success stories.
On 10-11 November 2020 the EIC organised an Investor Day dedicated to the EU Green Deal, bringing together more than 100 active participants during the two days, out of which more than 40 investors.

Vital signs of the planet show us that global warming and climate change are a reality. The main cause is greenhouse gas emissions, and more specifically the CO2 ones. Part of the European Innovation Council (EIC), the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) initiative is developing ways of reducing carbon emissions.
Unlike fresh humus such as compost, stable humus makes a long-term contribution to soil fertility. It takes many years to form naturally - but now, for the first time, a manufactured granulate is available. European Innovation Council pilot's funded company Novihum Technologies is offering this product as an instant, lasting fix for tired soils is carrying out EU-funded research and development for its commercialisation.

Just a few months ago you received an email saying that you’ve been accepted to the EIC Accelerator-programme. After the initial excitement of the (financial) support, you might be left with a few questions. Everything will be answered during the Virtual EIC Accelerator Coordinators’ Day in June.
On 4 and 5 May 2021 the EIC Energy4Planet-iniatitive kicked off. In total 25 corporates and 21 EIC beneficiaries attended the kick-off meeting, respectively in the hopes of finding that new key piece of technology or partnership to scale up.
Mycorena, a Scandinavian mycoprotein pioneer company, has announced the completion of a Pre-Series A funding round of €7.5 million (SEK77 million). The new investment will support Mycorena's acceleration and scaling up of its production.

On 29 and 30 June 33 EIC-beneficiaries went on a digital tour of the Netherlands during the EIC Corporate Day with Dutch giants. During the event, the SMEs matched up and explored business opportunities and collaborations with four of the Netherlands’ largest corporates: Eneco, KPN, Rabobank and Unilever.
From longer droughts to increased flooding and more robust crop diseases, climate change is creating new challenges for the European agriculture sector. With more accurate and reliable water data, crop yields on agricultural land can be improved and this information can help to fight the global food and water crisis. Through the support of the EIC-funded WATER4AGRI project, the Dutch company VanderSat developed a technology that can accurately measure the location and amount of water in the soil, anywhere in the world.

22 April 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the annual celebration of the environmental movement. According to the official Earth Day site, the theme for this year's Earth Day is climate action. The mission is to encourage individuals and organisations around the world to continue moving towards innovation to face the climate crisis and seize the enormous opportunities of a zero-carbon future. But while this day is a 24-h celebration, many start-ups spend the entire year going green, with innovating projects to accomplish this goal. We are all now spending more time online with tools that make remote work possible. Physical events are shifting to virtual events and the European Innovation Council is also adapting to more online formats. Tomorrow on 7 April 2020, from 14h00 to 17h30, an exclusive group of EIC-funded beneficiaries will gather in an online training event with a business coach to explore the full process of fundraising, present their case studies and get immediate peer to peer feedback. Greening agriculture is one of the main challenges in the fight against climate change. In line with the European Green Deal, the European Commission adopted a comprehensive new Biodiversity Strategy to bring nature back into our lives and a Farm to Fork Strategy for a healthy and environmentally friendly food system. Many pesticides and antibiotics are being banned to ensure healthier food, boost organic farming and privilege the use of eco-friendly solutions. Founded in 2018, the EIC-funded innovation developed by Agrosustain is a good example working on this domain. The Swiss start-up is trying to reduce food waste and promote sustainable agriculture with natural solutions for pest management.
For the very first time, the European Innovation Council organised the Coordinators’ Day virtually, meeting the companies funded by the EIC under Phase 2 in an online session. The purpose was to gather the EIC coordinators from the recently awarded projects, get familiar with the project management procedures and discover more in-depth the Business Acceleration Services.

European Innovation Council pilot's funded company Signinum Inovação, through XpectralTEK, has developed a multispectral imaging technology that allows to control pests and anticipate diseases in the vineyards. The technology is now being tested with Vinho Verde producers from the Minho region of Portugal.
The European Innovation Council pilot's funded company InnovaFeed, specialized in the production of insect proteins, announced to have completed a round of 40 million euros, the majority in the form of capital, led by a group of investors by Creadev, the Mulliez family's fund, and Temasek, the Singaporean investment giant. These follow the historical shareholders of the company, including Accuracy partners and Olivier Duha, co-founder of Webhelp, in a total of over 55 M€ secured in 2018

Scaling a company further is unforeseen on solving a number of challenges – most of those being common across all organisations out there. 96 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from 20 countries gathered to share their experiences during the EIC Accelerator Welcome Day. Some of them lost the fear of the camera and, during a small interview, shared with us their innovative approach, as well as current challenges they are facing in the industry. The past five years were the five hottest years since record-keeping began in 1880. It has become clear that the current Global Warming is caused by greenhouse gases emissions like carbon dioxide and methane. And the burning of fossil fuels by industries is the main contributor to this. But Carbon Clean Solutions Ltd. is reducing industrial CO2 emissions with an innovative technology. The company is of one of the few startups in the world specialised in carbon capture.

Since 2018, 3 June is known as the first official ‘World Bicycle Day’ to encourage the multiple environmental benefits of using bicycles for transport and leisure. Two days later, on 5 June, the World Environment Day takes place. To celebrate both dates, the EIC Community gathered three green Innovations that promote one of the most sustainable modes of transportation: cycling. From an ABS system for e-bikes to a GPS navigation specialised on urban mobility, here are 3 EIC cycling innovations that can change your experience on two wheels.
Every year millions of tons of plastic waste end up on our streets, in our rivers and covering our forests. A large part of this waste comes from packaging. The plastic bags we use, for only a few minutes, can last as long as 15 to 1,000 years in the environment and, according to a recent study, people could be ingesting or inhaling approximately 5 grams of plastic every week. The Finnish start-up Paptic Ltd, founded in 2015, addresses this environmental challenge with a sustainable alternative to plastic films. Paptic material has all the advantages of plastic - it's versatile, reusable, light-weight, soft, but it's made of renewable raw materials and it’s recyclable.
Within the EIC Business Acceleration Services, the European Commission launched a new open call for tenders for the EIC GHG Programme. This call shall result in a service contract to support beneficiaries in creating and adapting products and services to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The European Innovation Council pilot and Sonae are promoting a networking event for companies working on solutions for a sustainable future for the food business. The event will take place in Lisbon on 21 and 22 November. Applications are open until 30 August.
