Dr. Regina Luttge is an expert in medical and biological microsystems having bio-inspired functionalities. She coordinates CONNECT, a Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) project, which aims at providing better treatment for neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
Since 4 June 2020, the Swedish biotech company Idogen AB is traded on Nasdaq First North Growth Market. The traditional bell ringing was skipped due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the event was featured on the Nasdaq trading floor at Times Square in New York. Idogen AB develops tolerogenic cell therapies to prevent the patient’s immune system from attacking biological agents, transplanted organs or the body’s own cells or tissues.
The Irish company, developing cutting-edge technology to help cure cancers, has secured a significant new Series C round of approximately €18 million, bringing the total equity funding to around €37 million. The capital was led by existing shareholders, including Seamus Mulligan, an experienced biopharmaceutical executive.
The EIC Fund, which will provide equity from €0.5m to €15m to breakthrough innovation companies selected for EIC Accelerator blended finance support (grant and equity), has become an official entity. This is the first time the European Commission will make such direct equity investments in companies, with ownership stakes expected to be in general from 10% to 25% in start-up companies. The European Investment Bank, as advisors of the EIC Fund on behalf of the European Commission, will manage the ownership stakes of the European Commission.
The idea behind the SMILE project follows the outcomes of an ongoing FET-Open (EIC Pathfinder) project called ChipScope, which focuses on developing the first chip-sized optical microscope with super-resolution capabilities, and semiconductor nanoLED arrays with individual pixel operation. Such highly integrated nanoLED arrays from ChipScope will lead to extreme miniaturization and simplicity for super-resolution microscopy.
Every year millions of tons of plastic waste end up on our streets, in our rivers and covering our forests. A large part of this waste comes from packaging. The plastic bags we use, for only a few minutes, can last as long as 15 to 1,000 years in the environment and, according to a recent study, people could be ingesting or inhaling approximately 5 grams of plastic every week. The Finnish start-up Paptic Ltd, founded in 2015, addresses this environmental challenge with a sustainable alternative to plastic films. Paptic material has all the advantages of plastic - it's versatile, reusable, light-weight, soft, but it's made of renewable raw materials and it’s recyclable.
Within the EIC Business Acceleration Services, the European Commission launched a new open call for tenders for the EIC GHG Programme. This call shall result in a service contract to support beneficiaries in creating and adapting products and services to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Medical technology company EBAMed announced the successful completion of a CHF 1.2 million seed financing round. EBAMed develops medical devices to enhance protontherapy, a precise non-invasive treatment option for heart arrhythmia patients. The seed financing will be used to test EBAMed‘s first integrated ultrasound-based device to monitor heart motion and command the therapy machine. These pre-clinical tests are planned for 2020 in at least one protontherapy center in Europe or the United States.

On 7 April, EIC beneficiaries were introduced to the full process of fundraising during the EIC’s first ever online Community Event. The event was focused on the best ways of finding potential investors, communicating and pitching, and understanding negotiation tactics and terms and conditions. The online training, led by EIC business coach Martin Theyer, combined the suitability of different types of funding to companies in different sectors, stages of growth and market readiness.
The European Innovation Council is organising to a special ePitching session with Procurers on 30 April 2020. The European Innovation Council Business Acceleration Services and Roche invite you to apply for our joint EIC Corporate Day Online, a specially designed service to increase and accelerate your business collaborations with Roche, the pharmaceutical giant.
SYNCH, an ongoing EU-funded project, is creating a hybrid system where a neural network in the brain of a living animal and a silicon neural network of spiking neurons on a chip are interconnected by neuromorphic synapses.
A total of 117 innovative solutions to tackle the coronavirus have been selected as winners of the European Innovation Council-led #EUvsVirus Hackathon. The event, which involved over 380 volunteers, 2,400 mentors and over 800 partners, brought together over 20,900 participants from 141 different nationalities, as well as different areas of expertise and backgrounds.
There are about 36 million people in the world who are blind, and a further 216 million who live with moderate to severe visual impairments. But fortunately, innovations are now playing an important role to deliver deep improvements to their quality of life. The app Be My Eyes, for example, is connecting customers who are blind or have low vision with over 850,000 volunteers for guidance and help with tasks like cooking, finding lost items, catching a bus, reviewing mail and more. The EIC-funded solution is a game-changer, proving how innovation is fostering inclusion.
The Italian start-up is providing insurance companies and digital communities with a platform that helps profiling and engage their customers. The EIC solution offers relevant insurance through push notifications, delivering an ‘instant’ 7-second insurance policy sign-up. In this platform, zero paperwork is required to ensure a better experience for users. This year Neosurance closed a €1.1 million funding round, backed by Net Insurance, Luiss Alumni 4 Growth and a group of investors led by Mezzetti Advisory Group.
The Future and Emerging Technologies programme (FET) allows also young researchers and ambitious students to contribute to some of the most exciting research adventures. In a win-win situation, the fresh knowledge of junior researchers can become an asset for the progress of complex scientific challenges, while the students can experience a multidisciplinary approach to research.
Greening agriculture is one of the main challenges in the fight against climate change. In line with the European Green Deal, the European Commission adopted a comprehensive new Biodiversity Strategy to bring nature back into our lives and a Farm to Fork Strategy for a healthy and environmentally friendly food system. Many pesticides and antibiotics are being banned to ensure healthier food, boost organic farming and privilege the use of eco-friendly solutions. Founded in 2018, the EIC-funded innovation developed by Agrosustain is a good example working on this domain. The Swiss start-up is trying to reduce food waste and promote sustainable agriculture with natural solutions for pest management.
Time is an illusion, breakfast time doubly so. In future, human workers might not be alone in experiencing frenetic mornings thanks to EU-funded researchers who have equipped robots with human-like time perception capabilities – and tested them in the kitchen.
The insurance-focused artificial intelligence (AI) solution has announced a partnership with Rokk3r, a global innovation technology and consulting company, to enable the company to enter the Latin American insurance market and roll out its AI-driven services to insurance companies based in the region.
For the very first time, the European Innovation Council organised the Coordinators’ Day virtually, meeting the companies funded by the EIC under Phase 2 in an online session. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often praised for its ability to make objective and rational decisions, unlike humans, who deal with reality in a subjective manner. The researchers from the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) project TIMESTORM trained robots to learn some of these subjective abilities of humans, focusing on time-perception.
Hiring and retaining the right talent is crucial to a business’s growth, but for a start-up, it can be difficult to establish a solid HR strategy. With little time and resources, many early firms undervalue Human Resources and forget to nurture their teams. The EIC Community Training of June focused on this challenge and provided key recruitment tips, ranging from leadership strategies to the best ways for retaining top employees.
In 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic, organisations shifted to remote working arrangements that have made cybersecurity risks a bigger threat. Many start-ups are facing new challenges to ensure social distancing directives while continuing to serve their customers. To help SMEs answer to the evolving cyber problems, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) is developing a booklet with best practices. Wondering how secure your organisation is? The BrainCom project develops novel medical devices for restoration of speech and communication in aphasic patients suffering from upper spinal cord, brainstem or brain damage. At the same time the researchers also tackle the ethical aspects of the innovative technology.
