The problem

Individual testing for Covid is the best, but it is expensive, time consuming and patchy due to limited testing

The solution

Sewer surveillance for the virus can quickly, cost-efficiently and covering large proportion of a population provide information on the spread of the contagion and allow easier targeting for the deployment of resources (human and material).

What you have done during the weekend

We have defined the solution concept, identified all data sources, collected data, harmonized various data sets so that they are compatible (interoperable) and then applied data analytics to link the sewer surveillance results with all that data. This allows the assessment of the current and future evolution of the pandemic. we have also developed all user interfaces and produced the dissemination material. In addition, we have answer requests and expose the scientific bases of the approach. We have started from scratch to deliver a solution around the initial resultas regarding the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the sewerage.

The solution’s impact to the crisis

All of the above is integrated in an online platform that visualises and shows consequences of various mitigation measures. The outcome is the optimal combination of those measures. The biggest bang for your buck!

EU has 446 million inhabitants and entire Europe about 750 million. There were about 120,000 deaths due to the coronavirus. This platform can help decision makers direct resources where they are most needed and where the impact is greatest.

The necessities in order to continue the project: Further research is needed into the real-time qPCT, sampling protocols and the linking of sewer surveillance data with the other databases. Further models, both statistical and Machine Learning based will need to be tested on the database, as well as cost data for various resources/mitigation measures need to be collected. This will then be tested and validated.

The value of your solution(s) after the crisis

The solution can be used not only to track the existing crisis, but also as an early warning system for the second wave of infection, for the new virus emergence or for linking other sewer surveillance analyses (e.g., for illicit drugs use, antibiotic resistance, etc) to assess health risks and intervention consequences.
