The EIT Digital Challenge 2019 competition organised every year by the leading European accelerator identifies such deep tech innovative scaleups. Oculavis GmbH, headquartered in Aachen, Germany, was named the best scale-up of the year in the Digital Industry category in Brussels on November 7, 2019. In addition to 50,000 euros in cash, the prize package consists of services of the same amount to promote the growth of Oculavis GmbH across Europe.

From a device that measures blood sugar levels without finger pricking, to a radiofrequency drone detection technology and a platform that delivers information about mobility behavior through smartphone sensors – the 25 finalists nominated for the EIT Digital Challenge covered a wide variety of topics within the deep tech field. Oculavis won the first prize in the "Digital Industry" category with its service platform with customizable service apps, AR and AI applications.

Oculavis has developed software for industrial machine builders to enable them to assist their customers remotely. Installed in the cloud or locally, the software has an interface where you can see a live video filmed with a smartphone, tablet, or glasses connected. Everything is enhanced augmented reality, a translation tool, easy access to the technical documentation of the machine, and can order spare parts if necessary.

"It allows them to solve problems efficiently by reacting quickly and avoiding having to send people on the spot when it is not necessary," said Markus Grosse Böckmann, co-founder of the company, during an interview to the French website Industrie & Technologies.

A sustainable mindset
With the Augmented Reality based software solution, which is compatible with smart glasses and every tablet and smartphone, experts from a machine manufacturer can take a look through the eyes of the machine operator on-site from the comfort of their office without having to travel to the machine location. This not only saves time, money and frustration, but also reduces CO2 emissions by reducing the travel of technicians and service experts.

Focused on Germany so far, Oculavis now has broader ambitions for expansion, especially in France. Even though some international customers already exist, this targeted expansion is intended to improve the acquisition and support of local customers. The Swiss-Swedish multinational corporation ABB and the German manufacturing group Trumpf are large costumers, operating at international level.

“They are big customers,” continues Grosse Böckmann. “They use 800 glasses connected with our software in the United States”.

The project has received a Phase 2 grant from the EIC SME Instrument program. The total Phase 2 grant amount is 2.4M€.
