Who can apply?

Trelleborg is looking for EIC start-ups working on innovative and disruptive approaches for:

1)    Connected tires & vehicles for specialty tires applications

Since its invention in mid of 1800, a tire has always played a key role in moving people and goods around the globe. The function is still the same after almost 2 centuries, but the new technologies have offered totally new perspectives. Thanks to a new generation of sensors and devices, topics like safety, performance optimization, preventive maintenance are valid for tires as well. This is even more valuable when a tire is able to talk to the vehicle and remote devices. This trend is growing on passenger cars and trucks segments, but there is still a large space for growth when it comes to specialty tires, such as those for agricultural or construction vehicles. Trelleborg is looking for solutions that can be integrated in its premium products and which can generate value for its customers namely:

  • measuring tire wear
  • calculating cost per hour
  • geo-referencing the tire on a map
  • following the product across its entire life

2)    Green & renewable materials for production

As part of its “50 by 25” climate target, to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2025, and its continuous focus on finding sustainable materials, Trelleborg is looking for new raw materials or recycled elements that can be included in its product, guaranteeing the same premium standards and creating less impacts for the globe. The innovation can be targeted at the type or quantity of the materials used as well as the production process itself. Tires are made essentially from polymers, steels, cords and other chemicals: all of these elements could be totally or partially replaced by more sustainable elements, which can potentially also simplify the current complexity associated to the sourcing and to the supply chain of the current materials. An area of interest is represented by materials coming from proximal markets, so elements which are not yet used in the tire industry and which instead a waste for other industries.

3)    Marketing digital solutions for B2B industries

Over the last decade, marketing processes and tools have been quickly transforming, adopting new technologies as well as new communication channels, shortening the distance between the brand and the customers, digitalizing the sales process. While most new solutions have been designed in the framework of B2C consumer marketing, there is an increasing need of tailored solutions that can accelerate the business of large B2B companies that need to understand   and influence end users behaviors. Trelleborg is striving to look for something really innovative that can be applied on a global scale, with the ultimate goal to support the brand and the commercial activities for its premium products and solutions. Some examples of projects that are changing the daily work of Trelleborg’s Marketeers:

  • New Sales & Marketing automation processes and tools
  • New ways of engaging consumers while enhancing brand loyalty
  • Digitalize and gamify part of the sales process
  • New branding creativity
  • Virtual exposure to increase brand equity

4)    Smart factories & production processes digitalization

As most of the global large companies, Trelleborg is intensively investing in the industry 4.0 for its factories, with the aim to increase productivity and quality and reduce operational costs. Trelleborg Wheel Systems has 14 plants across 4 continents, therefore the need of connecting them remotely is an essential step to manage such a wide footprint.

Preventive maintenance, enhanced safety, centralized reporting and planning and guaranteed business continuity in case of troubles are some of the elements Trelleborg has put at the center of its agenda when it comes to smart factories. Ideally, each solution will be first tested in a pilot plant, and the progressively rolled out on a global scale in order to achieve an alignment in terms of technological standard and maximize the economies of scales.
