Forbes’s article states that 90% of women are the primary healthcare decision-makers for their households and those entrepreneurs are key for solving the biggest health challenges facing this world. The Irish company iBreve is at the forefront of the digital HealthTech development and made it to the list. The start-up was founded by two former Google employees aiming to improve stress resilience by monitoring breathing patterns with the help of machine learning.

Wearable devices in the form of wristbands and smart bands are facing a year-on-year growth and several companies have started innovating on this industry. The Ireland-based start-up iBreve is riding this wave with their wearable meant to improve stress resilience. The company’s digital health solution analyses respiratory patterns in real-time, enabling market applications for stress reduction, remote monitoring and chronic disease management.

The idea for iBreve’s solution came up after a trip around the world. Flavia spent a month with her co-creator in Rishikesh, India – also known as the yoga capital of the world. Inspired by this experience, they saw an opportunity to combine the ancient breathing knowledge of eastern cultures with new sensor technology. Back home, they build the first proof of concept prototype, attended the Mobile World Congress and successfully participated in hardware acceleration programs.

“At iBreve we show you how you can breathe ‘smarter’. We developed a wearable that helps people to cope with stress by analysing breathing patterns in real-time. It prevents stress by detecting shallow breathing, guides through relaxation exercises & its machine learning algorithm optimizes your stress resilience long-term”, explained Flavia Wahl during an interview to the website Women of Wearables (WoW).

iBreve has been specifically designed for women’s health & well-being. The start-up created a discreet wearable that can be easily attached to any bra, which offers a perfect position to measure breathing through chest expansion. iBreve4men attached to the belt-line is planned in 2020 and will be using the same hardware kernel.

“In the tech world you still run into more men than women. You can imagine, the amusing conversations I have explaining a female focused product that is attached to the bra to male investors. On my path I met a lot of amazing people that supported me”, added the co-founder Flavia to the website Women of Wearables (WoW).

iBreve’s technology received interest from Harvard’s Boston Children’s Hospital to be included in clinical trials for epileptic seizure detection & prediction. With the Epileptic Seizure Prediction System, the tracking and analysis of seizures can be shared with clinicians & allows to personalize treatments.

This project has received a Phase 1 grant from the EIC programme. The total Phase 1 grant amount is 50.000 €.
