Sifted’s reporters — in partnership with Dealroom.co — dig into the data and made a selection based on the money these startups have raised, how quickly they are hiring and how formative they have been over the past years. 2 EIC-funded companies are among the top European startups to follow in 2020. Infarm and Ada Health are making a difference in the long run and you can find out more about them below.

Infarm: The Berlin-based startup Infarm makes modular vertical farms which can be put in places such as grocery stores, restaurants, shopping centres and schools. Led by Erez Galonska, the idea is that consumers can actually pick fresh produce such as tomatoes or lettuce themselves.

The company in June 2019 closed a $100m series B led by London VC Atomico with Balderton Capital, Astanor Ventures and Cherry Ventures also in the round. Infarm has already won deals with big supermarkets such as Casino, Intermarche, Auchan as well as Amazon fresh and in the U.S, it plans to launch growing hubs at 13 additional QFC stores in 2020.

This project has received a phase 2 grant from the EIC programme. The total Phase 2 grant amount is 2.7M€.

Adahealth: This EIC-funded company has developed a software that provides a unique visual reasoning support for medical professionals during the diagnosis process. Founded in 2011 and officially launched in late 2016, Ada is today one of the world’s fastest-growing medical apps. The Berlin- and London-based company combines artificial intelligence (AI) with the medical insights of doctors to help people around the world understand and manage their health.
