Stories: XpectralTEK's technology will be used to predict plagues and diseases in vineyards

European Innovation Council pilot's funded company Signinum Inovação, through XpectralTEK, has developed a multispectral imaging technology that allows to control pests and anticipate diseases in the vineyards. The technology is now being tested with Vinho Verde producers from the Minho region of Portugal.

This spectral imaging solution is non-destructive and can be used in different samples ranging from small plants to large cultivation areas.

The use of this technology allows, in real time, to control and anticipate problems such as nutritional deficiencies, pests, diseases and water stress.

This technology that allows "talking to plants" is now being tested directly with Vinho Verde producers from the Minho region of Portugal. With this solution, farmers will be able to monitor vineyard culture in real time and make informed decisions.

In early 2019, the technology won a PT2020 project under the Regional Operational Program of the North, equivalent to a financing of 800 thousand euros. The FREND Platform X02 project aims to be a centralized platform for the acquisition, diagnosis, and storage of information and will be implemented through the company's spin-off XpectralTEK technology vehicle.

The company has received a Phase 1 and a Phase 2 grant from the EIC pilot SME Instrument in 2018 of 886.988 € for a new portable spectral camera system for the Cultural Heritage Conservation market. Art conservators & Cultural Heritage preservation institutions need more analytical means to control their interventions in order to guarantee the maximum possible quality in their work. For that they need to know and understand their subject of work - the art piece - and the materials that were used to make them – this currently has enormous lab costs that make only the finest pieces eligible for analysis. Signinum has developed XPECAM, that has specific technical features for the cultural heritage conservator’s work combined with a user-friendly interface that removes the need for external lab tests on art works or structures – this increases the added value of the conservator’s work while reducing time and external costs. 

With the company's spin-off XpectralTEK, the focus is now also in the agro-food and industry sectors.
