In 2020, over 25 billion devices worldwide will be connected to the internet. We’re not just talking about phones, tables and laptops, but anything from household appliances to lamps. All these connected devices are called the Internet of Things (IoT). One of the many applications for IoT revolves around Smart Cities; using data and algorithms to implement smart policies and increase the quality of life. Think of automatic sensors in parking lots, thereby reducing traffic circulation, or thrash cans that will signal when they are full, making for more efficient garbage collection routes. The possibilities are truly endless. The following seven EIC-backed SMEs all developed applications and innovations that make use of IoT and are applicable to Smart Cities, one way or another:

Cinfo's Tiivii technology is a game changer in live streaming. With just some standard cameras and a broadband connection, the Spanish company is able to create a professional production using their cloud AI platform. Close ups, ball tracking, player tracking, advertising, virtual merchandising, paid stickers, VIP seats...they provide the tool for redefining the economy of sport clubs, music venues and even education.

UK-based Crypto Quantique is a deep technology company that has developed a transformational cybersecurity technology, using the most advanced techniques in cryptography and quantum physics. Klepsydra is a Swiss SaaS company that offers high performance edge data processing software for embedded systems. Klepsydra reduces development times by 50% and speeds up data processing by 40%. Their primary market is the space industry and the startup has close relations with ESA and NASA.

Disruptive new deep tech invention Synx Hive, developed by Norwegian Nornir AS, is a new network kernel that enables the Real Time Web. Real Time Web is an AI driven web network where IoT and robots become part of the web. The network can also monetize data across domain and url and enable trade on data between web pages and online services.

Spain’s OpenNebula is building the Next Generation Edge Cloud Platform to build and manage an On-Demand Edge Cloud using resources from bare-metal providers. It’s used to implement different types of cloud deployments, from clouds tuned to address the demands of a niche market to clouds optimized to manage the virtualized resources in the data center. Telefonica, Crytek and Booking.com are some examples of users.
